Sales Engineer / Cost Estimator

📍 Victor, New York
💲 Salary Range:  $55,000 to $80,000 based on experience

At Heritage Packaging, we make flexible packaging for applications where performance matters. That could mean reagent pouches used inside diagnostic instruments, barrier packaging for aerospace components, or specialized industrial covers and liners. We’re not a high-volume commodity plant. Most of what we make is custom, technical, and built around solving manufacturing challenges.

We’re looking for someone who can bridge the gap between customer requirements and the realities of production.

This role is part estimating, part process planning, and part problem solving. You’ll review customer specs and drawings, figure out how a product could actually be manufactured here, estimate costs and labor, and help support successful production launches. You’ll work closely with sales, operations, engineering, and customers to develop practical manufacturing plans that support safe, efficient, and profitable production.

This is a good fit for someone who likes figuring out how things work, enjoys manufacturing environments, and can balance technical detail with real-world practicality.

👀 What You’ll Do:

Estimating & Process Development

  • Review customer specifications, drawings, samples, and requirements

  • Develop manufacturing methods and production flow plans

  • Build cost estimates including labor, materials, setup, tooling, and production time

  • Determine realistic production rates and labor standards

  • Help select materials and construction methods for new applications

  • Create clear production instructions for manufacturing teams

Production & Operations Support

  • Work closely with operations to ensure quoted methods are realistic and manufacturable

  • Support new product launches and production startups

  • Help troubleshoot manufacturing or process challenges

  • Assist with tooling, fixture, and process improvement ideas

  • Maintain organized estimating and engineering documentation

Customer & Sales Support

  • Participate in customer calls, technical discussions, and plant visits

  • Help gather technical information needed for quoting and development

  • Support outside sales and business development efforts

  • Communicate project status updates internally

🧠 What We’re Looking For

You do not need to know everything about flexible packaging on day one. But you should be comfortable learning technical manufacturing processes and asking good questions.

We’d especially like to see:

  • Manufacturing, converting, packaging, or process development experience

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Mechanical and analytical thinking

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once

  • Good communication skills with both customers and production teams

  • Comfort working in both office and manufacturing environments

Preferred Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field
    OR

  • 5+ years of hands-on manufacturing/converting/process development experience

Experience with any of the following is helpful:

  • Flexible packaging or converting operations

  • Manufacturing estimating or quoting

  • Production planning

  • ERP/MRP systems

  • Reading specifications and technical drawings

What the Job Is Actually Like

This is not a corporate “innovation hub” job where you sit in meetings all day making PowerPoints.

You’ll spend time:

  • walking production

  • reviewing specs and samples

  • talking through manufacturing challenges with operators and supervisors

  • figuring out practical ways to build products

  • balancing customer expectations with production realities

Some days are fast-paced. Some projects are straightforward. Others require creativity and collaboration to figure out the best path forward.
