Because of its previous successes with preservation covers, Heritage Packaging was engaged to design and fabricate flexible barrier covers that were utilized to protect a pair of 14’ diameter by 10’ long sections of C-130 fuselage during transport on the deck of a ship from the USA to the Orient.
During periods when aircraft are undergoing extensive maintenance and or engineering upgrades, their engines and engine subsections must be protected from corrosion. The gas path, or area between the intake and exhaust ports, must be conditioned and kept at a humidity level below 40%. In this case the USAF Series C-130J aircraft with four Allison turbo-prop engines needed a preservation system.
During periods when an aircraft will be undergoing extensive maintenance and or equipment upgrading, its engines must be preserved to protect them from corrosion. Typically an expensive process of removing the engines from the aircraft so that they can be covered is followed. In an effort to save money Heritage Packaging was asked to design and fabricate covers, that could be installed without removing the engines, that would preserve the engines at a humidity level below 40%.
A large aircraft manufacturer was experiencing problems with corrosion occurring on propellers for C-130 aircraft upon receipt from suppliers and and when shipping spares to customers. The fourteen foot diameter propellers are mainly constructed from composite materials, however the hub contains sensitive control mechanisms that are susceptible to corrosion.
